The Harappan Civilization, also called the Indus Valley Civilization, was a very old society in India and Pakistan. It started about 5000 years ago! They built big cities with straight roads and houses made of bricks. They also had a good sewage system which kept their cities clean. They knew farming and traded things with other people. They used to write in a special way which we are yet to understand fully. This civilization ended, and we don’t know why. But they left behind many things for us to learn about their way of life.

Harappan Civilization, also known as Indus Valley Civilization, was a very old civilization that existed around 5000 years ago. It was found near the Indus River in South Asia, in the places we now call Pakistan and Northwest India. People who lived there made cities with straight roads, houses, and even bathrooms! They knew how to grow crops like wheat and barley and were excellent in making things from clay, metal, and stone. They made pretty pots, toys, tools, and jewelry. Their writing was unique but, we still can’t read it! The Harappan people loved trading. They would trade their stuff with people from faraway lands like Mesopotamia, which is modern-day Iraq. But around 3900 years ago, this great civilization slowly disappeared. Some guess it could be due to earthquakes, floods, or people moving to other places. Even though it ended, Harappan Civilization left us clues about how people lived a long time ago. We learn a lot from this civilization and it helps us to understand our past better. Just like a detective, archaeologists are still trying to find more about this amazing civilization.

The cities had houses made of baked bricks, with an organized drainage system that kept the cities clean. They also had markets, storage facilities, and even public baths. The people of the Harappan Civilization were skilled farmers, who grew crops like wheat and barley. They also raised animals such as cows, sheep, and goats. They were experts in crafting beautiful jewelry, pottery, and seals. The seals, often made of stone, had animal figures and symbols on them, which suggest they had a form of writing, but it hasn’t been decoded yet. The Harappan Civilization had a peaceful society, as there is no evidence of wars. Around 1900 BC, this civilization started to decline. Despite many research, the reasons for this decline are still unclear. It could be environmental changes, like a major flood or drought, or possibly a big earthquake. Although it vanished, the Harappan Civilization left behind a rich heritage that helps us to understand the life and achievements of our ancient ancestors.
