Now, let’s learn about why soil is so important. Soil is like a supermarket for plants. Just like we need food to grow and be healthy, plants also need nutrients to grow. And where do they get these nutrients? From the soil, of course! Not only does soil provide nutrients, but it also gives plants a place to put down roots and grow.
But soil does more than just feed plants. It also helps clean our water. When rain falls, it can pick up harmful things like chemicals and dirt. As the water seeps through the soil, these harmful things get trapped. By the time the water reaches underground reservoirs, it’s clean and safe to drink.
Let’s move onto how soil is made. Imagine you’re holding a rock. Now imagine that rock breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces over many years. That’s how soil starts! Each type of soil has a different job. Clay soils are good at holding onto water, sandy soils let water drain away quickly, and silt is somewhere in the middle.
Now, we all must realize, soil is not unlimited. We can’t waste it. We need to take care of it. We can do this by not littering, not using harmful chemicals, and growing lots of different plants to keep the soil healthy.
