I am honored to have the opportunity to speak to you all about a great personality of our country, a warrior king who was an epitome of courage, integrity and patriotism, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj was not just a king, but a prolific visionary, who in the era of the 17th century, laid the foundation of a Marathi empire which was later known as the Maratha Kingdom.

In an age of political unrest and social injustice, Shivaji Maharaj emerged as a beacon of hope for the common people. Born in the hill-fort of Shivneri on February 19, 1630, Shivaji was a born fighter. His mother, Jijabai, was a deeply religious woman who instilled in Shivaji, the importance of ethics and righteous values. Under her guidance, Shivaji grew up to be a brave and honest leader who was deeply committed to his people and his land.

Shivaji Maharaj demonstrated his leadership skills at a very young age. By sixteen, he managed to gather a dedicated army of Mavala soldiers. His rule was characterized by progressive administration, military prowess, and respect for women. He established a competent and progressive civil rule with the help of disciplined military and well-structured administrative organizations. His innovative military tactics, indomitable courage, and progressive administration catapulted him to the status of one of the greatest warriors of his time.

Shivaji Maharaj was a true visionary. He understood that to maintain his kingdom’s sovereignty, setting up a robust naval force was crucial, making him the Father of the Indian Navy. His fort architecture is another testament to his vision and tactical acumen. He built around 300 forts along the western coast of Maharashtra, each strategically located and unique in its design.
