Ever wonder what are the top 10 most spoken languages in the world?

I was expecting that the English would be no. 1, but that’s not true. There are some Indian regional languages in the top 10 too, which totally surprised me.

I have listed the top 10 languages by the number of native speakers in this blog post. Rankings are as per the recent data of 2019.

However, these rankings can not be 100% accurate and can only give you an overall idea.

I have also created a simple infographic featuring out all those 10 languages to make you understand in a better and easy way.

Top 10 Most Spoken Languages

1. Mandarin

Mandarin is a language family which has multiple variations of the language Chinese. There are more than 918 million native speakers of the language.

Mandarin is spoken in 13 countries but is primarily spoken in China.

2. Spanish

Spanish is also a hugely spoken language with more than 460 million native speakers. It comes under the Indo-European language family.

Spanish is spoken in 31 countries but is primarily spoken in Spain.

3. English

English is the world’s third most spoken language with more than 379 million native speakers. It also comes under the Indo-European language family.

English is spoken in over 137 countries but is primarily spoken in the United Kingdom.

4. Hindi

Hindi is also a language of the Indo-European family which has more than 341 million native speakers.

Hindi is spoken in about 4 countries but is primarily spoken in India.

5. Bengali

With its 228 million native speakers, Bengali is also a hugely spoken language of the Indo-European family.

Bengali is spoken in 4 countries but is primarily spoken in Bangladesh.

6. Portuguese

Spoken in over 15 countries and with its 221 million huge native speakers, it comes at the 6th position.

Portuguese is also a language of the Indo-European family and is primarily spoken in Portugal.

7. Russian

Russian is also a language of the Indo-European family and has more than 154 million native speakers.

Russian is spoken in 19 countries but is primarily spoken in Russia.

8. Japanese

Japanese is a language of the Japonic family and it has more than 128 million native speakers.

Japanese is spoken in 2 countries but is primarily spoken in Japan.

9. Western Punjabi

With more than 92.7 million native speakers, Western Punjabi is a hugely spoken language of the Indo-European family.

Western Punjabi is spoken in 2 countries but is primarily spoken in Pakistan.

10. Marathi

Marathi is also a language of the Indo-European family which is a regional language of India but has still more than 83.1 million native speakers.

Marathi is mainly spoken in Maharashtra, India.

Wrapping it up

Yes, I was surprised too.

I didn’t expect a few languages to be in the top 10 list, but it was surprising when I looked at the complete list.
