Tim Berners-Lee is the father of the World Wide Web. He developed the first website and browser in 1990, launching the Internet into mainstream use.

He didn’t do it alone. He worked with a team of engineers and scientists from around the world to create what we know today as the internet. The World Wide Web has revolutionized how we access information and communicate with one another, and without it, we would not have YouTube or Facebook or Instagram or Snapchat.

Berners-Lee grew up in London and went to Oxford University where he studied physics and graduated with a first class degree in 1976. He then went on to study artificial intelligence at MIT before returning to London to work for CERN (Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire). Here, he created a program called Enquire which allowed him to share documents with colleagues remotely via e-mail; this was an important step toward what would later become the World Wide Web.

That’s it.
