Raja Ram Mohan Roy — Father of Modern India

Raja Ram Mohan Roy is the father of modern India. He worked tirelessly to reform the country’s caste system and abolish sati, a practice in which a widow is forced to burn herself alive on her husband’s funeral pyre.

In 1815, he founded one of the first Indian periodicals, called The Bengalee. In it, he wrote about women’s rights and education, as well as other issues related to social reform.

He also founded an organization called the Brahmo Sabha, whose goal was to support the abolition of sati and educate widows about their options for life after their husbands’ deaths.

That’s it.
