Anant Pai — Father of Indian Comics

Anant Pai is the father of Indian comics. He created some of the most iconic characters in Indian media, including Amar Chitra Katha, the original comic book series about Indian myths and legends.

Pai was also instrumental in creating India’s first animation studio, Toonz Animation Studios, which has produced cartoons such as The Ramayana and Rama & Sita.

He started out as an illustrator for magazines like The Illustrated Weekly of India before becoming a full-time writer; his first story appeared in 1940. He went on to write more than 500 books during his career, including short stories and children’s books as well as graphic novels based on Indian mythology.
