Lindley Murray was born in England in 1745. He grew up to be a minister and a teacher, but he is best known for his writings on grammar.
He published A Grammar of the English Language in 1795, which included rules for spelling and punctuation as well as grammar.
He also wrote several other books on grammar, including English Reader (1793) and English Grammar (1821). His work helped to standardize the English language across the world.
