APJ Abdul Kalam was an Indian scientist, engineer, and administrator who served as the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007. He was dedicated to the field of science and technology and was known as the ‘Missile Man of India’.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1931 in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam was the youngest of five siblings. He completed his studies in physics and aerospace engineering in Madras Institute of Technology and achieved a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology.


Kalam began his career as a scientist in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was involved in the development of the first indigenous satellite launch vehicle. Later, he took up the role of the chief executive of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). He was also involved in the design and development of the first Indian satellite launch vehicle, SLV-3.

President of India

Kalam was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002 and served in office for a term of five years. He was known for his humility, integrity and selfless service to the nation.

Early Life and Education

Kalam was born in a middle-class family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He had an interest in science from a young age and pursued an education in the same. He completed his graduation in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli and his Aerospace Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai.

Career in Science

Kalam joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969, where he was part of the team that developed India’s first satellite launch vehicle. He was transferred to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in the early 1980s, where he was appointed as the Chief Executive of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. He was the architect of India’s ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.


Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. His term was marked by several initiatives, such as the launch of the Pokhran-II nuclear tests, mission to the moon, launch of the space mission Chandrayaan-I, and launching of the Bharat Ratna award.
